A good tiler checks the substrate for flatness before laying a single tile, using a long straight edge to find any humps or dips. Where the floor is out of level, a self-levelling compound is poured to create a smooth, even plane. Walls are checked in the same way and packed or skimmed where needed. This groundwork is invisible in the finished job, yet it is the single most important step of all.
