Some retailers describe Neolith as porcelain, others call it ceramic and many simply call it engineered stone. Each label contains a grain of truth, yet none tells the whole story on its own. In the Neolith factory, natural minerals are pressed at up to 400 bars and fired at more than 1,200°C, producing a dense slab with near zero porosity.
The word stone in sintered stone refers to the natural mineral content and the stone like character of the finished product. It does not mean the slab was quarried. Instead the material is rebuilt from mineral ingredients, which is why it can offer the look of marble with a consistency that natural blocks cannot match.

The main practical distinction lies in the raw material blend. Porcelain is traditionally based on refined clays and feldspar. Sintered stone brands such as Neolith use a broader mix of natural minerals, oxides and in some cases recycled content, aiming for properties closer to natural stone. Why Neolith Is Not Engineered Quartz
The most important distinction for homeowners is between sintered stone and engineered quartz. Quartz worktops typically contain around 90% crushed quartz mixed with pigments and bound by resin. That resin is what limits quartz. It can scorch under a hot pan, yellow in strong sunlight and is not recommended for outdoor use.
Neolith contains no resin at all. Its minerals are held together by the sintering process alone, so heat, ultraviolet light and frost have little effect on it. Both materials are sometimes loosely described as engineered stone, which is why it pays to ask a supplier directly whether a product contains resin.
A simple test when comparing worktops is to ask one question: is there any resin in it? If the answer is no and the slab has been fired at extreme temperatures, you are looking at sintered stone or porcelain rather than quartz.
What the Classification Means for You

Look at available thicknesses, slab sizes, whether a design has Full Body colour through the thickness, the finishes on offer and the warranty. Neolith offers 12mm and 20mm options for worktops, large format slabs of around 3200mm by 1600mm and a residential warranty when bought through authorised channels.
It is also worth asking about silica content. In 2024 Neolith introduced silica free formulations, starting with Arctic White and Abu Dhabi White in 20mm. For many buyers, a brand’s commitment to safer and more sustainable production is now part of the decision.
Common Myths About Sintered Stone
One common myth is that sintered stone is simply a thick floor tile. While it shares ceramic roots, a worktop slab is made at a far larger format and designed for the loads and cut outs of a kitchen. It is fabricated to measure from full slabs rather than laid in small pieces with grout lines.
Another myth is that sintered stone is fragile because it can be made very thin. Thin formats of 3mm and 6mm exist for cladding and furniture, yet worktops are made in 12mm or 20mm and are fully supported by the cabinets beneath. Once installed correctly, the surface copes with daily family life with ease.
