What Is Neolith Made From?
Every Neolith slab starts life as a blend of finely ground natural minerals. There is no polyester resin, no plastic and no glue holding it together. The ingredients are bonded purely by heat and pressure, which is what gives the material its remarkable resistance to heat, stains and fading. Because the colour and pattern are created from minerals rather than dyes held in resin, Neolith does not yellow or fade when exposed to strong daylight. The finished slab is also 100% recyclable at the end of its life, which is a genuine point of difference from resin based surfaces.
The pattern itself is applied using high definition digital decoration during production. On certain designs the manufacturer also uses its Full Body technology, where the veining continues through the thickness of the slab so that edges and sink cut outs look convincing rather than showing a plain core.
The Idea Behind Sintered Stone
Sintering is the process of fusing particles together with heat and pressure without melting them completely into a liquid. It mimics the way igneous rock such as granite forms, where minerals are compacted and heated until they bond into a solid mass. Neolith presses its mineral blend under immense force, dries it, then fires it in kilns at temperatures above 1,200°C. The particles lock together so tightly that the finished surface has near zero porosity.
That near zero porosity is the secret behind most of the benefits people talk about. With virtually no pores for liquids to enter, oil, coffee, wine and turmeric sit on the surface rather than soaking in. It also means there is nowhere for bacteria to hide, so the surface is hygienic and food safe without ever needing a sealer.

How Neolith Differs From Other Worktop Materials
Neolith is often grouped with quartz, granite and porcelain, yet it is a different material from each of them. Quartz worktops are engineered from crushed quartz held together with resin. Granite is a natural stone cut directly from the ground. Porcelain worktops are closely related to sintered stone but are made by a wide range of manufacturers with varying specifications. Who Makes Neolith?
Neolith is made by TheSize Surfaces, a Spanish company founded in 2009 in the province of Castellón on the east coast of Spain. The region is the heart of the European ceramics industry and TheSize is widely credited with pioneering sintered stone as a worktop material. Its slabs are now distributed in more than 80 countries and specified in homes, hotels and commercial buildings worldwide.
The company places strong emphasis on sustainability. Its production runs on renewable electricity, the water used in manufacture is recycled and the vast majority of industrial waste is reused. In 2024 it also introduced silica free formulations, starting with Arctic White and Abu Dhabi White in 20mm, as part of a wider move across the stone industry towards safer fabrication.
In simple terms, Neolith is natural stone rebuilt from the ground up. It keeps the beauty and toughness of rock while removing the resin, the porosity and the inconsistency that hold other materials back.
Sizes, Thicknesses and Finishes
Neolith is produced in large slabs, which means long runs and generous islands can often be made with fewer joins. It comes in several thicknesses to suit different uses and a variety of surface finishes that change how the stone looks and feels under the hand.
Large format slabs up to around 3200mm by 1600mm, with smaller formats for particular designs and applications.
3mm and 6mm for cladding and furniture, with 12mm and 20mm the popular choices for kitchen worktops.
Options such as Silk, Polished, Riverwashed and Ultrasoft give anything from a soft matt feel to a high gloss shine.

The Honest Limitations
No material is perfect and it is worth knowing the drawbacks before you commit. Neolith is extremely hard, yet like other ceramic based surfaces it can chip if a heavy object strikes an exposed edge or corner. Choosing a sensible edge profile such as a small bevel helps greatly. It also costs more than many quartz worktops because of the energy involved in firing and the specialist skill needed to cut it.
