Silica is a hot topic in the stone industry. Here is what it means for Neolith, how UK rules protect fabricators and why your installed worktop is safe for everyday use.

The Short Answer

Many standard Neolith designs contain some crystalline silica, which comes from the natural minerals used to make them. The exact amount varies by design and is set out in the manufacturer’s safety data sheets. In 2024 Neolith introduced silica free formulations, starting with Arctic White and Abu Dhabi White in 20mm, as part of a wider move towards safer surfaces.

For homeowners, the key point is that an installed worktop poses no silica risk in normal use. The health risk from crystalline silica arises when dust is created during cutting, grinding and polishing in the workshop. The danger comes when it is cut, ground or polished, producing very fine respirable dust that can be breathed deep into the lungs. Long term exposure can cause silicosis, a serious and irreversible lung disease.

Workers who fabricate stone worktops are most at risk because their work generates this dust every day. This has led to tighter regulation and growing demand for lower silica materials across the industry.

The Regulatory Picture in the UK

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, fabricators must keep exposure to respirable crystalline silica below the workplace exposure limit of 0.1 mg/m³. In May 2026 the Health and Safety Executive announced a major focus on engineered stone, publishing updated guidance and a programme of more than 1,000 inspections of fabricators over 2026 and 2027.

HSE guidance highlights that engineered stone can contain up to 95% crystalline silica and sets out controls including lower silica materials, on tool water suppression, suitable respirators, health surveillance and thorough cleaning. Abroad, Australia banned engineered stone from July 2024 following silicosis cases among workers.

How Neolith Compares With Other Materials

Crystalline silica content varies widely between worktop materials. Traditional engineered quartz is typically around 90% or more crystalline silica. Low and zero silica engineered surfaces are now available. Is Neolith Safe for My Home?

Yes. Once a worktop is installed, it does not release silica dust during everyday use such as cooking, cleaning or cutting food on a chopping board. The documented health risk relates to the dust created during fabrication. Homeowners are not exposed to that risk in normal kitchen use.

The main thing to avoid is any cutting or grinding of stone inside your home. Reputable fabricators carry out all cutting in their workshop with proper controls. Industry guidance warns that any fabricator offering to cut slabs dry on your driveway or in your kitchen is one to avoid.
