The Most Common Worktop Dilemma
Quartz has been the most popular premium worktop in UK kitchens for many years. Neolith is the newer challenger that many homeowners now shortlist alongside it. Both look fantastic, both are low maintenance and both come in realistic marble and stone designs. So which one suits your kitchen better?
The answer depends on how you cook, how much sunlight your kitchen gets, whether you want an outdoor kitchen and what your budget allows. The biggest single difference comes down to one ingredient. Quartz contains resin. Neolith does not. That one fact explains most of the differences in how the two materials behave.

What Each Material Is Made From
Engineered quartz is made from crushed quartz, typically around 90% by weight, mixed with pigments and bound together with polymer resin of roughly 10%. The mix is compacted into slabs and cured. The resin gives quartz its flexibility in manufacture and its wide range of colours, yet it is also the source of its main weaknesses.
Neolith is a sintered stone made from natural minerals including clays, feldspars, silica minerals and oxides. It is pressed at up to 400 bars and fired in kilns at more than 1,200°C, fusing the particles together without any resin at all. The result is a dense, near non porous surface that behaves more like fired ceramic than like a resin composite.

Heat: The Biggest Difference
Heat is where Neolith clearly wins. Quartz resin begins to discolour at around 150°C and a pan taken straight from a hob or oven can be far hotter than that. The result can be a permanent pale or brown mark. That is why quartz manufacturers advise always using trivets.
Neolith has already been fired at more than 1,200°C, so a hot pan simply cannot change it. It is still sensible to use a trivet out of habit and to avoid extreme sudden temperature changes, yet everyday cooking heat is not a concern. For keen cooks this freedom is often the deciding factor.

Sunlight and Outdoor Use
Resin is sensitive to ultraviolet light. Over time, quartz placed in strong direct sunlight can fade or yellow, particularly lighter colours. This matters in modern kitchen extensions with large glazed doors and roof lanterns. Quartz is also generally not recommended for outdoor kitchens.
Neolith contains no resin and its colour comes from minerals, so it is fully UV stable. It can be used in sunny rooms without concern and is one of the few worktop materials suited to outdoor kitchens and barbecue areas.
Durability and Everyday Wear
Both surfaces are tough and both resist stains well. Neolith has near zero porosity, so wine, oil and turmeric stay on the surface. Quartz is also non porous, although strong chemicals and some cleaning products can affect its resin.
When it comes to edges, quartz is more forgiving. Its resin gives it a little flexibility, so a knock from a heavy pan is less likely to cause a chip. Neolith is harder but more brittle at exposed edges, which is why we often recommend a small bevel or rounded profile in busy areas.
You cook often, have a sunny kitchen, want an outdoor kitchen or want the most heat resistant surface.
Budget is the priority, you want the widest colour choice or prefer more forgiving edges.
You want a low maintenance, non porous worktop that never needs sealing.
Design and Appearance
Quartz offers an enormous range of colours and patterns from many manufacturers. Neolith’s range is more focused but includes striking marble looks, concrete and metallic effects and textured finishes such as Silk and Riverwashed. Full Body Veining on selected Neolith designs gives realistic edges, while quartz often shows veining on the surface only.
The simplest way to choose: if hot pans and sunlight are part of daily life, Neolith is the stronger performer. If budget and colour choice lead the decision, quartz remains an excellent option.
Price Comparison
Quartz is usually the more affordable of the two, although premium quartz designs can approach Neolith prices. UK guidance for sintered stone typically places supplied and fitted costs between around £400 and £750 per square metre, while quality quartz often starts lower. Fabrication also differs, as sintered stone takes longer to cut and needs specialist tooling.

Safety and Silica
Silica is an important topic in the stone industry. Engineered quartz typically has a very high crystalline silica content, which poses a risk to fabricators if dust is not controlled. Australia banned engineered stone from July 2024 because of silicosis concerns. In the UK, workshops must control dust with wet cutting and extraction.
Neolith contains silica minerals in many designs, yet the manufacturer has introduced silica free formulations, beginning with Arctic White and Abu Dhabi White in 20mm in 2024. Once installed, neither material poses a silica risk to your household in normal use. The concern relates to cutting and machining.
Questions to Ask Before Choosing
Think about how you really use your kitchen. Do you move pans from hob to worktop without thinking? Does sunlight pour across the worktops for much of the day? Are you planning to extend the kitchen into the garden with an outdoor cooking area? If the answer to any of these is yes, Neolith deserves serious consideration.
If instead your kitchen sees lighter use, sits away from strong sunlight and you want the widest possible choice of colours at a sharper price, quartz may be the better fit. Many of our customers view both side by side before deciding.
